Since 2004, the International Folk Art Market | Santa Fe has hosted more than 700 master folk artists from 87 countries in the world’s largest exhibition and sale of works by master folk artists. The Mentor to Market Programs (M2M) provide business and marketing workshops, hands-on skill building, peer-to-peer learning, and long-term support for folk artists to help them improve their livelihoods and participate more effectively in the global marketplace. Over the last decade, the Market has offered business-development training to 820 artists and their representatives from more than 40 countries. Through M2M, as well as the hands-on participation in the Market itself, artists develop valuable new skills to improve their businesses, build assets, and gain economic security for themselves and their families. They also acquire the confidence needed to be successful in an international marketplace.

IFAM | Collection at the Dallas Market Center provides an opportunity for master folk artists to participate in a venue that puts them in contact with hundreds of buyers from all over the United States and beyond. Through these wholesale connections, artists can now have year-round income, creating a lasting economic impact in their communities.

IFAM | Online is a unique model of training that provides hands-on experience while guiding artists through the channels of the global marketplace. Combining an online learning lab with an opportunity through the IFAA online store, this bold new online shop will strengthen the participants’ capacity to expand their businesses, as well as provide artists with a new source of year-round income. The online store features the folk art of 18 artist groups representing 16 countries and features jewelry, textiles, baskets, and more.

In 2013, on the occasion of the Market’s 10th Anniversary year, IFAA published its first book, The Work of Art, written by local author Carmella Padilla. The Work of Art invites readers to understand and invest in the living legacy of folk art as a way to participate in the human story of the handmade––and to make a meaningful impact on lives worldwide. This lavishly-illustrated book examines the role of folk artists in the twenty-first century, recognizing their power as creative and socially responsible champions for global change, connection, and cultural sustainability.
We also premiered our first documentary film, The Silkies of Madagascar, whose trailer won the prestigious Cine Golden Eagle Award, tells the story of how access to sustainable, global, fair-trade markets preserves an ancient tradition, empowers women, and changes the future for their children. We are currently entering the 22-min. film into film festivals around the country.
International Folk Art Alliance Community Outreach
Connects New Mexico’s youth, their families and communities to the IFAA artists.
Each year IFAA reaches out to underserved communities in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico through a range of programs and activities. IFAA provides education through activities in schools and at the Museum of International Folk Art and distributes 1,000 complimentary tickets to youth groups, their families, and teachers, along with information on how to integrate Market themes into their school’s curricula. Through Breakthrough Santa Fe, teenagers are enlisted to mentor children on the Passport Program during Family Day at the Market. IFAA also produces the annual Community Celebration, featuring a procession of Market artists, artist demonstrations, hands-on activities for children, and international food and music.
During the week preceding the 2014 Market, IFAA outreach expanded to include international music performances and workshops at diverse venues in partnership with several community organizations. This expansion was made possible through the generosity of funding from the Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America program. Southern Exposure is a partnership between Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, midatlanticarts.org, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation.
